So for one of our Christmas presents, my in-laws gave us $100 for a date night. I wanted to use it all at once and go and eat a really nice place and go to a movie. But Steve had a better idea. He suggested that we do two cheap dinners and two movies. And that's what we did! The picture here is the inside of the place we went to eat on both dates. It's Happy Sushi. It's this really small place on 4oo North behind the bank. And yes, it serves sushi, along with other really good Japanese food. We love this place. And if you haven't tried it, you should. It is so good. We would love to have friends that like to eat sushi and go to this place (once I have the baby so I can have more than just California rolls or Yellowtail or Salmon Rolls) and just order a couple of platters of really good and strange sushi. The two things that we love about Happy Sushi is the decor. The way they did the walls is really cool. And the other one, they have a sushi bar where you can sit at and watch the old Japanese man make the sushi. It's really cool. Anyways, we went here for both dinners and had a really good time there. The food is to die for, and it's so much easier to eat there when there are no kids yelling or screaming at you!
The first movie that we saw was The Golden Compass. It was good. I say only good, because I read the books this last summer. Well, I read the first two books and started the third. I haven't finished the third yet. I'm thinking about finishing it this month. Again, the bad habit of starting a book and not finishing it happened to this book. Oh well. But for those of you that haven't seen the movie, go see it. All the critics here in Utah and the ultra conservative said that this movie was really bad because of the Church (not any one specific church, but the ruling church in the world) presences in the movie and the witches that are in it. It's not even that bad. Not to give away the plot, but the idea is there is corruption in the church and it's up to this one girl, Lyra, to fight against it, although she really doesn't know that's what she's suppose to do, but ends up doing it anyways. It's like any other movie about rebelling against the corruption of government or church. There are other movies that come to mind that these same critics didn't bash, but are very violent and use a lot of swearing, i.e. V for Vendetta. But we have that movie, and it's just really well done and makes you think. Anyways, The Golden Compass is a good movie and we had a good time watching it. But I think everyone should read the books at least after they see the movie. You'll get a lot more out of it and understand what's really going on. Plus, the movie doesn't even end where book 1 does. So there you go.
The other movie that we saw (and we went our last date last night) was National Treasure: Book of Secrets. We really liked this movie. If I was still in school, I would be a history major. And one of my favorite things to do, is to find and learn weird things about history and all the conspiracy theories. Now, I don't believe half of what I hear or read, but it's fun to talk about some of the theories out there and try to judge if it could or really did happen. Anyways, this movie plays to things that I like to do. And I know it's just fiction, but some of me wonders how much of what was said and shown in this movie was true or based on real facts or legends. Like the artifacts that are mentioned in the movie, they have to be real. Anways, it was a fun movie. No better or worse than the first movie. It was just a fun movie to go see with your hubby. Plus, Nicholas Cage is fun actor, and Ed Harris always plays the bad guy, but this time Harris was a different type of bad guy. Not your typical bad guy I guess is what I'm trying to say.So all in all, our date nights were great! I'm sad that now all of our date money is gone, and we'll have to wait until we have extra money to go to another movie. I would have loved to have seen Sweeney Todd, but for some reason it's not coming to Logan until the 11th. We saw the play while I was at Western taking a theatre class that required us to go see plays throughout the quarter, so I would buy an extra ticket for Steve and we would have a date on those nights I had to go to a performance. We did that a couple of semesters ago when Steve was taking a USU creative arts class. Anywho, Sweeney Todd was great to see live, but we both wanted to see the movie. It just has an awesome cast (three of the actors play a role in the Harry Potter films) and you can never go wrong with a Tim Burton movie! So here's to hoping that we can get at least one more date in before the baby comes. And one big thanks to our baby-sitter!
